Porsche Brake Pad Replacement — DIY Guide
Learn how to replace brake pads on your Porsche. Complete guide covering front and rear pads with required tools and safety procedures.
Overview
Brake pad replacement is an essential maintenance task for any Porsche owner, especially those who enjoy spirited driving or track days. This guide covers the process for most modern Porsche models.
Safety First
Always work on a level surface. Use proper jack stands — never rely on a jack alone. Wear safety glasses and gloves when working with brake components.
Step 1: Remove the Wheel
Loosen the lug bolts while the car is on the ground. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands. Remove the wheel.
Step 2: Remove the Caliper
Remove the caliper mounting bolts (usually two bolts on the back of the caliper). Carefully lift the caliper off the rotor and support it with a wire or bungee cord — never let it hang by the brake line.
Step 3: Remove Old Pads
Slide the old pads out of the caliper bracket. Note the orientation and any wear sensors.
Step 4: Compress the Piston
Using a C-clamp or caliper compression tool, slowly push the piston back into the caliper body. This makes room for the thicker new pads.
Step 5: Install New Pads
Install the new pads in the same orientation as the old ones. Reinstall the caliper and torque the bolts to specification.
Step 6: Bed the Pads
After installation, perform several moderate stops from 40 mph to bed the pads properly. Avoid heavy braking for the first 100 miles.
